Aveeno Baby Products Ingredients – Natural Or Toxic?

Aveeno Baby Products

Aveeno has worked to gain a reputation for using all natural ingredients in their Baby skin care line. Aveeno baby products are very popular due to Aveeno’s claim of using the science of nature to create natural baby shampoo or diaper rash cream. But how natural are Aveeno baby products? A study by the “Campaign for Safe Cosmetics” claims Aveeno baby products, and Aveeno products in general, are not all natural and are even made of harmful chemicals. The next time you pick up a bottle of Aveeno baby lotion, check out the label and you will be able to see for yourself.

Surprisingly, not all ingredients are listed on the packaging. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, they tested 48 products from different brands and found several that tested positive for 1,4-dioxane or for formaldehyde, which are known carcinogens and skin irritants. Aveeno’s Baby Soothing Relief Creamy Wash tested positive for 1,4-dioxane. You do not need all of the ingredients to be printed on Aveeno baby products to know that what you are holding isn’t all natural. Aveeno products have ingredients such as Ceteareth 6, which they claim to be natural, but the process that the Ceteareth 6 undergoes can produce 1,4-dioxane. The 1,4 dioxane is not an ingredient Aveeno puts into their product, it is a by-product of the manufacturing process, therefore they do not have to put it on the label. However, once you see Ceteareth 6, you know that there is a possibility of carcinogens in the product you are considering for use on your little one. Another clue when you are looking at the ingredients label is know which ingredients are derived from petroleum. The following ingredients are commonly found in Aveeno products and result from processes that use petroleum: deButylene glycol, petrolatum, mineral oil and phenoxyethanol.

Mustela baby products have a solid reputation when it comes to the safety of their ingredients. In lieu of Aveeno, you might want to consider switching to this more natural line of baby shampoos, creams and cleaning products.
